🏷️ Income & Expense Categories
Create, organise and manage the categories you use to classify transactions.
Where to find them
Open Settings → Configuration → Income Categories or Expense Categories. Both screens work the same way.

Add a category
- Open the category screen and tap +.
- Enter the Category name (New Category).
- Tap Save.
Names must be unique: a top-level name must not repeat another top-level category, and a subcategory name must not repeat a sibling under the same parent. Upper/lower case and extra spaces are ignored. The same subcategory name is allowed under two different parents.
Add a subcategory
Open a category’s options and choose Add Subcategory (for example Food → Groceries). In pickers, subcategories appear as Parent → Child.
Edit, move and promote
- Edit Category – rename it.
- Change Parent Category / Move to Subcategory of… – move a category under another parent. If a budget is involved Casviz warns you that the budget calculation may change; choose Move Anyway to continue.
- Promote to Parent Category – turns a subcategory into its own top-level category. Existing transactions keep their category.
Reorder
Tap Reorder, tap a category to select it, then use the up/down arrows to move it. The order is used in all pickers.
Delete a category
Casviz checks first and tells you if a category cannot be deleted. A category cannot be deleted while it:
- still has subcategories (delete or move them first),
- is used by a budget,
- is used by transactions (re-assign those transactions first, for example with the bulk “Set Category” action), or
- is used by a repeat transaction (edit or delete that schedule first).
Rather than deleting a category you no longer use, just leave it – or rename it. Old transactions and reports keep making sense.
Uncategorized
Transactions without a matching category (for example after some imports) show as Uncategorized. Use bulk Set Category to tidy them up.
